BookmarkTrash User Manual

Installation

  1. Visit the Chrome Web Store
  2. Search for "BookmarkTrash"
  3. Click Add to browser and confirm the permissions
  4. Pin the extension icon to your toolbar for quick access

How It Works

BookmarkTrash silently monitors your browser's bookmark deletion events in the background. Whenever you delete a bookmark or a bookmark folder, BookmarkTrash automatically intercepts and saves it to the trash — the entire process is seamless and requires no action from you.

Deleted bookmarks expire and are permanently removed after the configured retention period. You can restore any bookmark at any time before it expires.

Viewing Deleted Bookmarks

Click the BookmarkTrash icon in your toolbar to open the popup and see the full list of deleted bookmarks. Each entry shows:

  • Site icon — Fetched automatically; a colored letter avatar is shown when unavailable
  • Folder indicator — Bookmarks that belonged to a deleted folder display a folder icon
  • Days remaining — Shown in red when ≤ 3 days, orange when ≤ 7 days
  • Status bar — Displays the total count and the number of bookmarks expiring soon

Search and Sort

  • Type a keyword in the search box to filter bookmarks by title or domain in real time
  • Click the Title or Days Left column header to sort; click a third time to clear the sort

Restoring Bookmarks

Single restore — Hover over a bookmark row and click the restore button

Bulk restore — Select multiple bookmarks, then click the restore icon in the table header

When restoring, if the bookmark's original parent folder still exists, the bookmark is restored to its original location. If the original folder no longer exists, the bookmark is placed in a recovery folder in the bookmarks bar (default name: "Recovered By BookmarkTrash").

Folder Restore

When restoring a bookmark that belonged to a deleted folder, the behavior depends on your settings:

  • Bookmark only — Restores only the individual bookmark, without recreating the folder structure
  • Whole folder (Pro) — Recursively restores the complete folder structure along with all bookmarks inside
  • Ask every time (Pro) — Displays a dialog so you can choose whether to restore just the bookmark or the entire folder

Permanent Deletion

Single delete — Hover over a bookmark row and click the clear button

Bulk delete — Select multiple bookmarks, then click the clear icon in the table header

Permanently deleted bookmarks cannot be recovered.
